The upland central forests of Mauritius provide a unique endemic habitat for a high number of endemic plants and animals.
As part of the natural ecosystem, several strangling fig species (Ficus) are occasionally seen in their mid strangling phases.
This particular photo is of an endemic ebony tree, Diospyros tessellaria, which is being strangled by Ficus rubra. The ebony tree may be as old as 500 yrs, and has probably had its figgy companion
